Introduction and Objectives: The aim of this study was to study the hematological parameters in aged broiler breeder roosters were fed dried pomegranate peels to disclose the plausible adverse effects of this by-product on blood clinical profile.

Materials and Methods: A total of 36 of Cobb-500 broiler breeder roosters were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups of 9 replicates containing 4 birds each. The control group received the standard diet. The other groups were fed with diets containing 10 or 20 percent dried pomegranate peels for 6 weeks. Blood samples were collected weekly from the brachial vein. Blood hematological and biochemical parameters including the red blood cell count, white blood cell count, differential white cell count, total protein, albumin, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL, triglycerides, ALP, ALT, AST, glucose, phosphorus, and urea were studied. Data were analyzed by SAS, and the means were compared with the least squares of mean (LSM) at P ≥ 0.05.

Results: Dietary treatment had no significant effect on the hematological attributes. Time of sampling had a significant effect on the percentage of monocytes (P = 0.038). Diet and time interacted to affect the red blood cells number (P = 0.048) and percentage of monocytes (P = 0.018). Regarding the biochemical traits, diet had a significant effect on some of blood biochemical parameters such as total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglyceride, ALP, glucose and phosphorus. Time had a significant effect on the total protein concentration, total cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and phosphorus. The diet by time interaction effect had a significant effect on total cholesterol, ALP, aspartate aminotransferase, and phosphorus (P< 0.05).

Conclusion: Despite of differences observed in the traits evaluated, the fluctuations were in the physiological normal range. Therefore, it might be concluded that feeding dried pomegranate peels pomace at the levels included in the present work, had no obvious adverse effect on the clinical profiles of the roosters.
