هدف از انجام این تحقیق بررسی تأثیر عصاره ساپونین بر عملکرد تولیدی، برخی فراسنجه‌های خونی و پروتوزوای شکمبه در گاوهای شیری هلشتاین بود. در این مطالعه از 20 رأس گاو هلشتاین 2 شکم زایش کرده که یک گروه با میانگین تولید 37/94 کیلوگرم در روز و روزهای شیردهی 98/62 و گروه دوم با میانگین تولید شیر 38/96 و روزهای شیردهی 98/45 بودند، در یک دوره آزمایشی 30 روزه (2 دوره 15 روزه) استفاده شد. تیمارها شامل 1- شاهد (گروهی که عصاره ساپونین مصرف نکردند) و گروه دوم که 8 میلی ­لیتر عصاره ساپونین استخراج شده از گیاهان نعنا، شیرین ­بیان و جنسینگ استفاده کردند.  بعد از یک دوره استفاده، به ­منظور حذف اثر تیمارهای قبلی 20 روز از جیره پایه استفاده شد و در دوره دوم جای تیمارها تغییر کرد. مصرف خوراک به­ صورت روزانه در هفته آخر هر دوره آزمایش ثبت شد. تولید  شیر در هر وعده شیردهی در روزهای 5، 10 و 15 آزمایش ثبت شد. به­ منظور تعیین ترکیبات شیر، در روز 15 آزمایش یک نمونه 50 میلی‌لیتری از دوشش صبح هر گاو گرفته شد. جهت ارزیابی فراسنجه‌های خون، نمونه­ گیری در هر دوره در روز 15 آزمایش صورت گرفت. نتایج نشان­ داد ماده خشک مصرفی، تولید شیر، درصد چربی شیر، درصد پروتئین شیر، تعداد سلول‌های سوماتیک شیر و نیتروژن اوره‌ای شیر تحت­ تأثیر افزودن عصاره ساپونین قرار نگرفت (0/05<p). غلظت تری‌گلیسرید با افزودن عصاره ساپونین به­ طور معنی‌داری نسبت به گروه شاهد کاهش یافت (0/05>p). همچنین با افزودن عصاره ساپونین غلظت استات، کل اسیدهای چرب فرار و تعداد پروتوزوای شکمبه به ­طور معنی‌داری کاهش یافت (0/05>p). به ­طور کلی عصاره ساپونین تأثیر منفی بر عملکرد گاوهای شیری هلشتاین نداشت.
