به منظور طراحی، ساخت و استفاده از دستگاه فعالیت سنج خودکار جویدن و ارزیابی دقیق­تر رفتار تغذیه­ای دام از  8  رأس گاو هلشتاین مشابه از نظر مرحله تولید، وزن، سن، نژاد و سلامت، در قالب طرح چرخشی یا گردان 2×2 و در دو دوره آزمایش 21 روزه (2 هفته برای سازگاری با جیره و 7 روز به‌­منظور نمونه ‌برداری) استفاده شد. تیمارهای آزمایشی شامل 2 جیره با اندازه ذرات علوفه­ای متفاوت و ترکیبات شیمیایی یکسان بود.  میانگین هندسی یونجه ریز و درشت 09/3 و 65/4 میلی­متر و میانگین هندسی جیره­ها به ترتیب 91/2 و 60/3 میلی­متر بود. رفتار جویدن دام با مشاهدات چشمی و دستگاه ثبت خودکار فعالیت جویدن ثبت گردید. زمان نشخوار در گاوهای تغذیه شده با اندازه ذرات ریزتر علوفه کمتر بود (0159/0=P). زمان مصرف خوراک ثبت شده به­صورت چشمی و با دستگاه ثبت خودکار فعالیت جویدن تفاوت معنی­داری نداشت. میزان جابه­جایی فک دام در زمان هر وعده نشخوار 34/334 و 47/295 سانتی­متر برای جیره حاوی ذرات ریز و درشت یونجه خشک در جیره بود (0001/0=P). زمان هر وعده نشخوار در این بررسی در دامنه 93/68 تا 33/55 ثانیه برای جیره­های حاوی ذرات ریز و درشت بودند (0001/0=P). فعالیت جویدن در هر وعده نشخوار با افزایش اندازه ذرات جیره، کاهش یافت. میزان جابه­جایی فک در یک  ثانیه در زمان نشخوار برای جیره حاوی ذرات ریز و درشت به ترتیب 86/4 و 34/5 سانتی­متر بود (1706/0=P). جابه­جایی فک در یک دقیقه هنگام نشخوار با افزایش اندازه ذرات خوراک تغییری نکرد (1706/0=P). مدت زمان عدم حرکات فک در بین هر وعده نشخوار برای جیره حاوی ذرات ریز 61/4 و برای جیره حاوی ذرات درشت 46/4 ثانیه بود. در این آزمایش ضمن ارزیابی دستگاه ثبت خودکار جویدن، صحت و دقت عملکرد آن مورد تأیید قرار گرفت.
