این مطالعه با هدف استفاده از سطوح مختلف پودر سیر درجیره آغازین و بررسی اثر آن بر عملکرد، وزن و سن از شیرگیری، برخی متابولیت‌های خون، نمره مدفوع، رشد اسکلتی و قابلیت هضم مواد مغذی جیره در گوساله‌های شیرخوار هلشتاین انجام شد. تعداد 30 راس گوساله نر و ماده هلشتاین (9/1±9/40 کیلوگرم) در قالب یک طرح کاملاً تصادفی به سه جیره آزمایشی شامل 1) جیره پایه بدون پودر سیر (شاهد)، 2) جیره پایه به‌همراه 5/0 درصد پور سیر و 3) جیره پایه به‌همراه 1 درصد پودر سیر به مدت 70 روز اختصاص یافتند. گوساله‌ها به‌‌مدت سه روز آغوز دریافت کردند و در طول آزمایش روزانه چهار کیلوگرم شیر در اختیار آن‌ها قرار گرفت. نتایج نشان داد که افزودن پودر سیر در دو سطح 5/0 و 1 درصد به جیره آغازین گوساله‌ها سبب افزایش مصرف خوراک شد و در سطح 5/0 درصد باعث افزایش وزن در کل دوره، افزایش وزن روزانه و وزن از شیرگیری بالاتر گوساله‌ها نسبت به گروه شاهد گردید (02/0>p)، هر چند بر ضریب تبدیل غذایی بی‌تاثیر بود. همچنین استفاده از هر دو سطح پودر سیر در کاهش غلظت کلسترول و تری‌گلیسیرید پلاسما، افزایش قابلیت هضم ماده خشک، ماده آلی، پروتئین خام و الیاف نامحلول در شوینده خنثی و اسیدی، و افزایش دور سینه و عمق بدن موثر بود (01/0>p). به‌طور کلی نتایج این مطالعه نشان داد که استفاده از 5/0 درصد پودر سیر در جیره آغازین گوساله‌های شیر‌خوار می‌تواند سبب افزایش مصرف خوراک، افزایش عملکرد، افزایش وزن از شیرگیری، کاهش کلسترول و تری‌گلیسیرید پلاسما و بهبود قابلیت هضم جیره گردد.
